We heartily congratulate Heidi Köck (8B), winner of the English competition in Carinthia, for her superb performance and excellent demonstration of linguistic skills and confidence. As already announced on social media, Heidi mastered the Fremdsprachenwettbewerb AHS Englisch in Carinthia with excellence and qualified for the Bundeswettbewerb in Graz, where she will compete with the best students from across Austria on April 8, 2026.
Read here what her impression of the competition was:
"The English competition was a really great experience for me. At first, I was simply grateful to be there, to practice my English, and, since I enjoy debating, to take part in that as well. I didn’t expect to win at all, especially because there were so many talented students. In the first round, we were taken to a separate room where we watched a short video and were given some time to prepare for the upcoming discussion. After that, the three of us entered the competition room, where a table was set up for us, along with the judges and an audience. During the discussion, there was a discussion leader who guided us by asking questions. To my surprise, I made it into the final!
The final round was between the top three contestants, and we were all quite nervous, to be honest. We had to do a role-play with the discussion leader – a native speaker – who acted as a professor while we took on the roles of students. We were asked to plan a trip through Carinthia for a visiting school group. Standing on stage with a microphone in hand and a large audience watching was a bit intimidating, but it was also a lot of fun. Honestly, it was difficult to tell who would win, since everyone was so talented and articulate. So I was really surprised when I was announced as the winner! All in all, I’d say the best part of the experience was meeting new people and pushing myself to do something I wouldn’t normally do."
Heidi Köck, 8B
Again, congratulations and all the best for the Austrian competition - fingers crossed!
